This thought from some of my writing this morning.
Sexuality is important as an issue in the church not because it is the pressing moral issue of our day, but because it is a tribal identity marker. Much like circumcision was the tribal identity marker of the Jewish people, such that literally one look could tell you if someone was “one of us,” so too one’s position on homosexuality immediately tells the Christian world which tribe you are part of.
Agree? Disagree?
Or, perhaps it’s truer to say that this was once the case, but the fact that the lines are getting blurred, and it no longer tells us who is in and who is out is behind the fear and heated rhetoric we witness today?
